I am a big fan of Jenny Colgan and absolutely love her books and this book I decided to treat myself too. I liked it but it wasn't my favourite book by Jenny. The writing has a certain warmth to it but I didn't feel so connected to the characters as I usually do. There were beautiful descriptions of the scenery and the food of course. There are recipes in the back if you fancy making any of the food that Flora the main character makes. I wonder if there will be a follow on book from this. I will read it if there is.

I loved this story, and the only reason I haven't given it five stars is because I would have liked just a bit more romantic tension. Although the Island of Mure is fictional, as Colgan says, it is based on places she has visited, and she describes it beautifully. I felt like I was there - I wanted to be there because I love the Scottish Highlands. I liked all the characters - I loved the back story of Flora's family. The romance developed nicely, but like I said, I would have liked a bit more time to have been spent on Flora and her romantic interest (no spoilers here). I am only sorry I have finished this book, and I am hoping there will be a sequel. There's certainly scope for one.

Amazon tells me I bought this book in February 2017, but I have the most enormous ‘to read’ stash (well over 200 books), and have been putting this one off.

I read it in two huge sittings. Nothing else was important apart from reading. It’s brilliant!

Flora has an enormous crush on her boss, but he doesn’t know she exists. She lives in London after escaping a remote Scottish island called Mure, after the death of her mother.

When work sends Flora back to Mure, it puts her in direct contact with her boss Josh. However on Mure, she meets handsome outdoorsy Charlie...

This is so much more than just a romance story. When folklore and lonely people, combine with the northern lights, the combination is heady and addictive. I was sorry to finish this book.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Wonderful! This 'holiday read' contains all of my favourite things - island life, a close-knit community, family drama, romance, fresh air, and real food. The story is so well told, with complex and full-blown characters that you can't help liking. Some of it is predictable, in the manner of all good stories, but I am halfway through and I have no idea how it is all going to end. That is such a rare quality these days. Sometimes predictability is just as enjoyable, if it is done well, but I have to say I am at a loss as to which way this story is going to go, which is very refreshing. I have had to put the book down for a while because, you know, life sometimes takes precedence. I am now going to make a poor imitation of standard Mure fare with supermarket oatcakes, dairy-free spread and vegan 'cheese', washed down with home-made fruit cake and *no* whisky. Sigh.

I do love Jenny Colgan books. The characters are warm and well drawn and you really feel you 'know'them. Flora is from the remote island of Mure at the northern tip of Scotland. But now she is a busy working girl in London working as a paralegal. When her job requires he to return of her family home she finds she must confront her memories and cope with her father, her boisterous brothers and their family farm as well as carry out the job for her firm.
This is very much in the style of previous books and while I really enjoyed it, it has to be said that there are elements of other books floating around. I felt the character of the American - Colton was drawn very much from the character in her previous book little Beach Street Bakery & its sequel. And if I am being really honest - and you should be in a review then I felt the ending was a bit rushed somehow and dare I say it pretty predictable. I can see a sequel coming from this one - which wouldn't be a bad thing especially if it focused perhaps on Lorna & Saif and the hints given as to their life - some of which we met in the short read - A Very Distant Shore.

I couldn’t put this book down. A great story of love and family in a very different and appealing setting. I almost felt I was living there and knew both the setting and characters and I don’t think a book can offer much more than that.

Just finished reading this and I did enjoy it as it was a bit different to many of this type of book. Jenny really made you feel the atmosphere of the Northern Islands, very evocative and atmospheric. I could almost say it makes me want to visit but really I think you need to live there to fully appreciate the beauty.
Only gave 4 stars as I felt I didn't really know the characters by the end of the book and I would say characterisation was weak but it was a pleasant read.

This as a little too sweet for me and the characters somewhat predictable.... Brash american, silent old farmer, sensible school mistress, career girl who is suddenly a brilliant cook, etc. The plot was pretty predictable too and in the end not a lot happened.
It kept me turning the pages but I wasn't really convinced about Flora 's life choices so I didn't feel satisfied at the end of the book.

What a tremendously fun romance and more. I really enjoyed reading and will go back and read again. My the story was more than a love story it was a family epic. The character's came to life as did the island they lived on. Great depth of story love the different glimpses of family life with it's ups and downs. Kept you guessing till the end. As wall good books wanting more.I would recommend it to read and will be looking for more of Jenny's books 🐬
